Memory Insights, a New Direction: From Numbers to a Story You Can Read

If you keep a journal, there is a question that arrives sooner or later: what is all this writing giving back to me?

We have spent the last year trying to answer it inside Deeditt. This article is about where that took us, what we are leaving behind, and why. It is written for anyone who writes to understand themselves over time, not for anyone who wants to know how the software works.

What Memories has been until now

Memories, the private half of Deeditt, has had three parts.

Log is where you write. A calendar, one or more notes a day, and if you want, a word for how you felt, how you slept, how much energy you had. Log is not changing.

Insights read your week back to you in numbers. How many days you wrote. How your mood balanced out. A short reflection on the week, generated from your entries. For a lot of people this was the first time a journal ever answered back, and we are proud of it.

History tried something harder. It looked for weeks in your past that resembled the one you were living, and showed you what you had written your way through the last time. It was an honest attempt to connect the present with the past, and the idea behind it was right.

What people who write every day told us

The numbers were useful for about a week at a time. Knowing you slept badly five nights out of seven is something you can act on tomorrow.

But people who had been writing for months, and then for a year, wanted something else. They did not want to be measured. They wanted to understand.

What changed this year? What keeps coming back without my noticing? What did I decide in March that I have forgotten by now? What is still open?

Those questions are not answered by a percentage. They are answered by reading. And almost nobody rereads a year of their own journal.

A new direction: the same journal, read from further away

So we have decided to take Memory Insights somewhere more tangible and less analytical.

Instead of a weekly score, Insights now read your journal back to you at four distances: the week, the month, the quarter and the year. Each one is the same journal, looked at from further away.

Up close, a week is a few lines about what happened: who was there, what you decided, what you kept returning to. A month has a shape. A quarter has themes. And a year is a short story that says what defined it, what you learned, where you changed your mind, and what remains open.

At every distance you will find the same four things:

  • A short text about the period, written from your own entries, in a tone that sounds like you rather than like a report.
  • What you recorded, feeling, sleep and energy, shown in fine detail for a week and as a simple shape for a year.
  • The people, projects and themes that persist, and where they stand: still open since November, new this year, closed in June.
  • Your own words, returned to you. What you wrote a year ago today. A line from months back that resonates with this week. Two entries about the same thing, far apart, that say the opposite.

None of this asks anything new from you. You keep writing the way you already do.

What happens to History

History as a tab is gone. What it was reaching for is not.

The people and themes History collected are now part of Insights on every horizon, with a state instead of a count. The connection between a week now and a week long ago, which History expressed as a match, is now an echo: your own sentence from back then, placed next to the one you wrote this week. It says the same thing History was trying to say, in a form you can actually read.

What does not change

Memories stay private, and Insights stay optional. The analysis is off by default on every account, and nothing you write is ever read for Insights unless you switch it on. When you do, you can read exactly what leaves and what does not in what happens when you turn on Insights.

Insights remain part of Pro. Writing in Memories is free on every plan, and always will be.

Why we chose this

Deeditt exists so that your words do not disappear. A number about your words is not the same as your words.

Reading yourself back, at the distance of a week or a year, in sentences that sound like you, is closer to what we meant from the start. Writing is remembering slowly. Insights are now built to help you do exactly that.

Try it in Deeditt
