A few days ago we had a school meeting with Lucien's teacher to talk about his #progress.

He's doing great in so many areas like maths, drawing, socially.. but #phonetics is still the same struggle we faced months ago.

As the teacher explained their reading method, I felt my resistance again. I've never fully agreed with the way they teach sounds at this stage, almost as if language is only patterns to memorize without explaining the #rules behind them.

And then today, something small happened while we played. Lucien was writing his name and told me it was misspelled.

He said it should be written as “Lusien,” because that's how the sounds make sense to him. He's been learning that the letter c sounds a certain way, and honestly, he's applying exactly what he's been taught.

That moment brought me back to the meeting, wondering if kids are ever taught why letters change sound depending on the next vowel, or how to make sense of these exceptions, I suppose they are but at 6 having that #knowledge could represent extra effort and a boring thing to learn.

#Parenting feels like this sometimes.. balancing trust in the school, trust in my child, and constantly questioning whether the system is helping them or confusing them. Even something as simple as writing a name can carry so much learning underneath. I still believing is not fair at his age.
