Today was the #birthday of one of Lucien’s best friends. He is a child somewhere in the #autism spectrum, and we spent some time at his house playing and celebrating.

At one point, they were playing table football, a friendly game to 10 points. Lucien was winning by two, then something surprised me.

Every time Lucien scored, his friend became #frustrated and upset. It felt like losing was becoming too much for him.

Lucien noticed it.

Without saying anything, he changed the way he played. He started missing shots he normally wouldn’t miss, he left small openings. Slowly, his friend caught up.. and finally won.

The other boy celebrated with a lot of #joy. Lucien looked at me. His face was calm, but a little sad, like he knew exactly what he had done.

I just smiled from the other side of the room.

A moment later, I told him I was #proud of him. I told him I had noticed what he did, and I thanked him for being #kind.

Today I saw Lucien choose kindness over winning. That is worth more than any game, and it's #teaching me a lesson, because when we're playing at home, he is acting like the other kid and even when I'm letting him win, my attitude is not close to what he chooses today.
